In recent years, the Canaries has implemented various strategies designed to achieve sustainable forms of development which are respectful of the environment of the islands.

  • The creation of the Canarian Agency of Sustainable Development and Climate Change.
  • The elaboration of the Energy Plan for the Canaries, based on four main principles: it aims to guarantee the supply of energy; maximise its rational use through efficient consumption; promote renewable energy sources; and achieve sustainable development .
  • The creation and development of laws as well as action plans designed to fulfil these aims.
  • The concession of economic grants to companies and families to encourage energy-saving measures.
  • The financing, through grants, of energy saving proposals in various sectors: construction, industry, transport, potability and desalination of sea water, etc.
  • Support for R+D+I (Research, Development and Innovation).
  • The organization of seminars and technical meetings.
  • Support for the tourist sector through the creation and adaption of companies in sustainable settings.
